intel_core_i5-750Quote: When it launched last year, the Core i7 platform redefined Intel's high-end processor segment. Unfortunately, the platform was also accompanied by high-end prices and, as such, has seen only a minimal share of the desktop market. Today, however, Intel is releasing a new platform that it claims will bring the performance of Nehalem to mainstream price points. Referred to as Lynnfield, the new platform shares its core microarchitecture with the i7-900 series, but introduces a completely new chipset and socket design. This means that not only will we see new processors, but new motherboards as well. Benchmark Reviews has been testing several of these new items and will be covering the launch in detail over the next few days. In this article, we examine the Intel Core i5-750 Quad Core Processor.

amdphenomIIQuote: Every time AMD releases a new processor, one question is on the tip of the tongues of enthusiasts everywhere: Is this the product to finally take the performance crown from Intel? I have to say that the AMD Phenom II X4 965 Black Edition CPU isn’t that product. This latest CPU from the green machine is simply a revision to the previous Phenom II X4 955 CPU. As we know this line of processors is still only able to compete with Intel’s Core 2 Quad line of CPUs, rather than take on Intel’s Core i7 beast.

Enter the socket AM3, AMD Athlon II X2 250 microprocessor - a new 3.0GHz mainstream dual-core chip based on the Phenom 'Deneb' architecture, but crucially stripped of all L3 cache. Like all the chips emerging from AMD's stables this year, the Athlon II X2 250 is manufactured on the 45nm SOI process at Global Foundries Fab-1 in Germany. The chip has a modest 65W TDP, and looking over specs we find a transistor count of 234 Million, 256KB of L1 and 2MB of L2 cache. Of course, the Athlon II has no L3 cache.

This article adds to the previous tests of the AMD Phenom II X4 940 Black Edition. We wanted to compare different CPU coolers, try the new AMD Overdrive 3.0.2 and AMD Fusion For Gaming, and run a number of popular benchmarks from HwBot.org. Besides, out of curiosity and in order to obtain higher results, we also overclocked the AMD RADEON 4890 graphics card.
